Comparison of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic and
the current COVID 19 pandemics
When comparing these two pandemics, I can say they are similar in many ways. Both pandemics
were caused by two different viruses. The Influenza pandemic was caused by the influenza virus and
COVID 19 pandemic was caused by the Corona virus. Both diseases can be described as deadly to
human. The influenza disease killed half a million of American population and when somebody died by
this virus, people would just hear bells. Sometimes the bell would just ring all day because too many
people in the influenza pandemic. This disease of influenza killed a lot of young people and old people
from the age of 65 and this is because it was more dangerous to them. One of the reasons why this disease
killed a lot of young people is because schools were open and other publics meeting were allowed. This
different to COVID 19 pandemic in the United States because schools are closed, and many publics
places are closed. Most importantly people are practicing social distancing which is helping a lot from
getting the corona virus. In the 1918 influenza pandemic pregnant women were in the elevated risk of
being dying. Even healthy young adults died in an extremely high rate in the influenza pandemic and
constituted a fairly large percentage of the total deaths. On the other hand, the corona virus is extremely
dangerous to elderly and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like obesity,
diabetes, or heart or lung disease are also at a higher risk for growing more serious issues when
they have COVID 19. These two viruses have the same symptoms and also, they spread the same
way. They both spread by coughing, sneezing, and touching. In 1918, people used masks like we
do today to protect themselves from getting Influenza.
