Comparing the Unlikely
Edward Taylor uses poems like “The Preface” and “Upon Wedlock, and Death of
Children” to express his relationship to God and who he is. Taylor displays this by using conceits
throughout his poem. Taylor’s conceits vary according to his mood and tone; which requires
readers to pay close attention to his vocabulary, similes and metaphors. As a result, his poems
are unique because they contain conceits full of far-fetched comparisons of unrelated things.
