HISTORY
In the year 1945,when Bombay’s new milk scheme came up it Polson, a well-known butter
manufacturer, was granted monopoly rights. Because of that rule the Small cattle producers
were only allowed to sell milk to the Polson company at reduced prices. Local diary farmers
led by Tribundas contacted Sardar Vallabhai Patel one day, and he urged them to form a
Diary cooperative in which the farmers would share ownership, but this was denied by the
Bombay government. Farmers would not give up and went on a 15-day milk strike, during
which they stopped selling milk, resulting in the formation of the Kaira district
cooperative.Tribundas was joined by Verghese kurien this began the transformation of Amul.
Amul ice cream was first introduced in Gujarat on March 10, 1996. Amul ice creams were
introduced to Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata in 1997 and ultimately, all of India in 1999.
