When I was in high school most of my friends were applying to four-year colleges. When they would ask
me where I applied to, I said I was going to community college first since I did not know exactly what I
wanted to do. There facial expression was like, “why not a university?” Though they did not say it out
loud, it seemed as if they thought I was not smart enough to go to a four-year college.
I personally feel that people think I did not have my priorities straight since I did not know what I
wanted to take up for a major. Being in a community college, I think people might see me as lazy and
content on settling with just an associate’s degree.
There are many things that get in the way of one’s education such as family issues, as well as financial
issues. I certainly did not want my mom to have the burden of paying for my school since she had to
support my sister and me. Though my mom wanted me to go straight to a university, she knew herself
that she could not help me financially. I had no other option but to work full-time, go to school part-
time, and pay for my own tuition and supplies. I did have financial aid, but they did not pay for much of
my tuition since I was only able to take 2-3 classes a semester.
Community college helps in many ways. You can get your general education done at a much cheaper
cost and still give you the opportunity to work. Some students (like myself) may not know what they
want to after high school, so starting off getting your general education helps you contemplate and
decide on what you want to do as a career in the future.
I think that community college is one of the best decisions one can make. It does not matter how fast
you finish school; what matters is that you worked as hard as you could, and that you finished despite
the many obstacles that you encounter in life.
