Communicating Closeness: affection, immediacy, and Social Support
In chapter 7 the author talks about four different types of closeness in relationships. My
questions are, each closeness plays a different role and has different meanings, what do
you think is the most important and least important? Do you think that there are more than
what are listed in the book? If so, what are they? What is the most common closeness
found in a relationship?
When I was reading this chapter about closeness in a relationship, I could not help but to
compare it to the relationship I have had. In this case my romantic relationship. During my
relationship I though I was well connected with my ex-girl friend through emotional
closeness, where it had helped both of us to trust each other, share thoughts, and care for
each other by being honest and disclosing ourselves to each other. According to Guerrero,
“a sense of shared experiences, trust, enjoyment, concern, and caring in a relationship
(Lee, Mancini, & Maxwell, 1990). Sharing and caring are fundamental to both the
experience and the expression of emotional closeness” (Guerrero, 2007, p. 159). As the
class talked about how disclosure can help build a better relationship by being honest and
open during last class, self-disclosure definitely helps to build a better, and stronger
