Communication : The broad process of exchanging ideas between participants. An active
process of encoding, transmitting and decoding.
Sender – message – channel – receiver
Language: A socially shared code or conventional system for representing concepts
through the use of arbitrary symbols and rule-governed combinations of those symbols.
Phonology – Rules for development of sounds, and the development of sound structure,
distribution, and sequencing. It also involves intonation & stress in addition to the rules for
combining sounds to make words.
Development begins with reflexive sounds, then cooing, babbling, exploration of
consonant and vowel sounds in the form of jargon, to true words.
Phoneme-smallest unit of sound than can signal a change in meaning.
Semantics – Development of the meaning of words and word combinations.

Syntax -Rules that govern the combination of meaningful units. Rules for word order,
sentence organization and the relationship between words.

Morphology -Rules concerned with the internal organization of words and meaning at the
intra-word level. A morpheme is the smallest unit of meaning. Includes bound morphemes-

Pragmatics – Rules for language USE rather than language structure. The ability to use
language for a variety of functions appropriately in a variety of situations.
