Weaknesses in Tomato Production
• Perishability of the Product
Tomato is a perishable crop which deteriorates rapidly if not properly
handled. They tend to spoil easily and so need either to be sold immediately or
stored properly. This requires better transport and storage facilities. As a
homogeneous product, there is no distinct product difference although
consumers may perceive differences in quality through its freshness. This implies
careful handling of the produce.
• Seasonality and Climate Change
The Department of Agriculture notes that the season to plant tomatoes in
the Philippines is from “September to January in hilly areas, and from November
to February in lowland areas.” This is because tomatoes grow best in cooler
climes; however, since tomatoes are adaptable, they can still survive the heat of
summer months.
But due to the apparent climate change in the country, tomato production
