College is important to me for many reasons. The main reasons are to make more money
so that
I can provide for my family, to be a positive role model for my son, and to prove to myself
as
well as to my family that I can accomplish the goals that I have set up for myself for
success.
I didn’t obtain my degrees from college until I was 11 years out of high school. I found
that in
this day and age it is very difficult to be able to support my family without having a
college
degree. I came to the conclusion that a lot of people want to have a better life, but not
everyone
has the motivation to go to college which can help them succeed in having that better life. I
didn’t want to be one of those people. I dropped out of high school to help support my
mom and
brothers when I was just 16. I worked very hard for little money while trying to make ends
meet,
but struggling every day to just barely pay the bills. I knew that if I could just go back to
school
and further my education, that I could be “somebody” someday. I have proven my
assumptions
about that happening by returning to high school and finishing my diploma with honors
and then
going on to college as an adult. I did some research and found that the median weekly
earnings
in 2011 for a person with “some high school but no diploma” was $451, a “high school
graduate”
earned $638, and a “college graduate with a bachelor’s degree” earned $1,053.(a)I was
