The Cold War: A Global History with Documents
Throughout history there are many cases which once former allies turn into absolute
enemies. History has shown the world that countries with opposing views are able to band
together to defeat a common enemy; however, what becomes of the alliance once the enemy is
defeated. The Cold War is a historical example of former allies turned enemies at war. To fully
understand where the relationship between the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union
went sour, humankind should posses’ knowledge of the opposing political and economic views of
the western countries including the United States of America and Great Britain and the eastern
country being the Soviet Union. Countries like Great Britain and the United States are capitalist
societies who believed in democracy, land ownership, and free trade. However, on the opposite
end was the Soviet Union who ran a quasi-democratic dictatorship. The Soviet Union also
believed the state should control all the land and it should benefit the citizens equally. World War
II created a common enemy between the United States, Soviet Union, and Great Britain all three
of the mentioned countries leader were intent on the defeat of Germany, Japan, and ending the
