Case 5 CocoCola company: Allegations of pesticides
in soft drinks in India
Coco-Cola, which is a global leader in bottled beverage received an
allegation from NGO, the centre for science and the environment that bottled
water and drinks produced by them contains pesticides. These pesticides can
cause cancer and even break down the immune system.
Coca-Cola company, which once left India in 1970’s due to govt. foreign
exchange regulation act was once again returned back to Indian market in
1993 due to liberalization of Indian market. In order to make a presence in the
local market, it brought many standard brands already existing in local market,
like Thumbs Up, Limca, Maaza, Kinley.
In 2003, CSE (Centre for science & Environment), Make an allegation that they
are creating health and environmental damage by passing on bio-solids as
fertilizer. Also, they are depleting the water table due to its bottling operations
and thus reducing water availability for irrigation to local communities. Due to
this allegation its sales are reduced in many parts of country as well as banned
also in some region, among which Delhi region and Kerala state are prominent.
