Close Reading of Mark Twain’s “Cannibalism in Cars”
The satire written by Mark Twain is an odd story told by the passenger of train to another
passenger accounting for a trip many years before of another trip this man had taken. It is a
powerful story that keeps the reader interested throughout the unfolding of the plot. The narrator
talks about how he had gone a train ride along many other business men and got caught in a
snowdrift along their journey. As the story is told we can tell that there is something wrong with
the narrator, he seems to be a little crazy. From what comes of just small talk about politics turns
into a crazy account of what this man’s snow-trapped story. He says how the men had to survive
in some way and end up creating a political system to elect people to be eaten by the rest of the
