Clementine dragged everything out from what her parents’ called The Black Hole and
piled it on top of her bed. Four shoes, three brushes, and way too many hair clips to count.
Socks, an extremely crunchy Easter Peep, and the top hat that went missing from the Monopoly
game two years ago. A Mr. Potato Head nose, three library books, her book report that was due
last Monday, and Friday’s Saturn sentences; some more socks, a Halloween mask, the skirt she
had pretended she’d lost, two flash lights, and a mitten. She also found a green plastic trapezoid,
a “Taking it Easy in the Everglades” snow globe, half a button, and Polka Dottie’s favorite
