What type of college student are you?
Hampton University faces a variety of different types of college students. Every
college student classifies himself or herself as either being apart of a fraternity/sorority,
an athlete, social butterfly, or an academic scholar. There is also a classification of
students that consider themselves combinations of these.
Fraternities and Sororities are a brotherhood and sisterhood of the “Divine Nine”.
The “Divine Nine” are organizations of historically African American, international
Greek lettered fraternities and sororities that consist of Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa
Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Phi Beta
Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Iota Phi Theta. On campus, you almost
never spot them unless it’s during our Hampton day party “12 to 2”. They come as a unit
doing their traditional Greek movements. If you are not a member, you are not allowed to
join their movements or it is said that you will be embarrassed for the rest of college. The
“Divine Nine” promotes leadership, academic excellence, as well as, giving back to
communities. As a college student, being apart of a fraternity or sorority, can benefit you
in ways that you can’t with other organizations. You have lifetime bonds with your
fellow brothers and sisters. It is great for networking and you are able to mature as an
individual.
Athletes are a group of players that play a specific sport as a team. Hampton
University offers Division 1 teams in basketball, football, tennis, track & field, golf,
softball, volleyball, bowling, and sailing.
Social butterflies are those who want to know everyone and be everyone’s
friends, which is a good portion of Hampton University. Each day you walk passed
Networking is important, because the world is about whom you know. Make as many
connections as you can. Meeting new people. Exposed to more experiences. Stand out:
