Introduction
Cisco Systems incorporated in 1984, began their company with the development of the
router. As business grew for them, their information systems lagged behind their exceptional
growth in sales and acquisitions of different technology firms. They experienced outages and
shutdowns leading to the implementation of ERP with one of the largest vendors, Oracle. Using
a SWOT analysis of Cisco Systems before and throughout their implementation of ERP
highlighted their management but lack of connection throughout the organization. Cisco had
multiple options to continue improving their business strategy and/or their information systems
strategy. However, for a successful organization, both need to work with each other. With
criteria of strategic alignment, competitive advantage and timing, Cisco Systems can decide a
best alternative to proceeding with their new adaption of ERP.
Problem Statement
Cisco Systems’ Business Strategy and Information Systems Strategy did not align during
imperative growth periods of the company forcing functional areas of the company to work
individually and deteriorate Cisco’s legacy environment.
Overview/Background
Cisco systems was founded by two Stanford Computer Scientists in 1984. Their primary
product is the router which dominated the market throughout the rise of Internet technologies. In
1997, Cisco ranked among the top five companies on the Fortune 500 in return on revenues and
