Cinderella, by Anne Sexton is a poem that relates to the fairy tale in the Disney story. The
Cinderella story expresses frustration with the representation of woman relationships.
When girls are growing up, the story being told is the beautiful Cinderella story with a
happy ending, which in the Anne sexton’s poem she is bringing reality, by how violent,
dark and cruel it can be.
The story starts by introducing an unfortunate little girl that lives with her father, her
step-mother and her two sisters. Cinderella’s mom has passed and now she has to do the
shores and be a “maid" in the house. Cinderella is being compared with Al Jolson and it
explains how she sleeps. In the poem Sexton starts to explain little details about the ‘rags
to riches’ theme that is present in the tale. Sexton’s explain many different stories before
she gets to the point of Cinderella, she talks about a plumber that wins the lottery, a
nursemaid, is married by an older son of a rich employer. Each position is based on real
life, giving them a new twist in life.
Sexton explains the physical beauty of the sisters, in contrast, she also explain how cold
hearted each of them can be, including her step mother. There was the big tale where the
girls get ready to meet the prince. Cinderella wanted to go; Cinderella and her sister ask
the dad each for a gift. Cinderella asked a twig and her sisters asked for dresses and
jeweler. Cinderella planted her twig on her mother’s grave which turned into a tree, and
