Inferno
In the epic poem divine comedy by Dante Alighieri, Inferno there are several themes of
in a sense justice and punishment expressed. In this epic poem Virgil, known as one of the
greatest Latin poets leads and is Dante’s guide through hell. Virgil is condemned to his life in
hell simply because he lived before God’s appearance so he was not subject to eternal life and
forgiveness. Virgil introduces Dante to nine circles of hell, each expressing a punishing different
sins depending on the extremity and type of sin. In most of these circles through hell there are
very cruel and gory punishments portrayed. Some sins do not even seem as bad as they are being
punished. At the beginning of the moral story Dante shows how he shows pity towards all the
sinners souls being punished, but towards the end he becomes colder and does not feel pity
