Course Description
This course is designed to give the future healthcare administrator a foundation in financial
concepts as they relate to the healthcare industry. Topics will include analyzing the
administration of clinical services, estimating profit margins, accounting and budgeting,
analyzing project acceptability, managed care healthcare reform, using metrics to monitor
various operations, and working with financial statements. Approved for distance learning. Must
be MHSA student or permission by instructor.
Course Objectives:
The objective of this course is to provide students with an understanding about basic concepts
of finance in the healthcare environment. Students will learn about healthcare cost centers,
financial planning, capital financing, and understanding financial statements and key financial
indicators.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Analyze key metrics to monitor healthcare operations.
2. Analyze the financial condition of a healthcare organization and use this information
to make strategic and operational decisions.
3. Develop the ability to critically analyze financial data and make sound fiscal and
capital budgeting decisions and communicate results to senior leadership and the
Board.
4. Compute costs, prices, and profit margins for healthcare organizations.
5. Understand what influences healthcare organization financial viability.
Course Delivery/Instructional Strategies:
The following modes of instruction will be used in this course:
▪ Lectures by instructor to describe and review concepts and techniques and their
applications in the health industry
▪ Discussions to critique the concepts and techniques
▪ Occasional guest lecturers from the field to complement the content of the course.
▪ Experiential team project work

Course Delivery and Student Responsibilities:
This is a hybrid course, and some course content will be conducted online. Throughout the
course, the student will complete a series of online modules, discussions, and assignments.
Communication between instructor and student and between student and student may include
online postings, discussion boards, and email. Online course interaction, communication, and
specific timelines for feedback are defined within each module on the Canvas myBGSU Web
Portal.
To be successful in this hybrid class you should be comfortable using a computer for the
following functions:
• Using a word processor (changing font, spell check)
• Using email for communication
• Sending an email attachment
• Navigating and searching the Internet
