•How should Tom Chong resolve the requests from the mayor of Klang?
Chong should consult with the lawyers from his corporate office. It is not his responsibility
to figure out the legality behind his matter. If he has not dealt with a similar situation in the
past, it is not expected of him to have the expertise in the matter, either. He should also
immediately notify his superior when he gives his weekly report so that there is
documentation and transparency.
•What should Chong do about the rumors of bribery and kickbacks to the category
manager?
It is unprofessional to act on rumors alone. However, bribery is a serious concern, despite
the performance of the category manager. Chong should confront the employee one on one
and present to him the allegations with an “innocent until proven guilty” attitude. He
should approach it in this fashion so that the employee doesn’t begin to resent Chong if the
employee is, in fact, innocent. Launching a formal investigation would only be necessary
if there were clear indicators of the employee’s lying, or if there were more conclusive
proof beyond rumors.
