1. The geographical features of East and Southern Africa can be made up by many
characteristics because of the vast size of this landmass. Most of the land can be
characterized as high plateaus but the land does have areas of high elevation like Mt.
Kilimanjaro. Another significant geographical element is the Great Rift Valley, which
extends from Jordan to the Middle East. Compared to the rest of the regions geographical
elements, this area has a fairly deep depression. Africa also has significant water features
like rivers and falls like the Victoria Falls, being surrounded by oceans. South Africa’s
climate is temperate, different from the other countries of the region because of its
proximity to the equator. The other countries experience considerable heat and severe
drought depending on the time of the year. With the small amount of rain, farmers provide
enough food to feed their families, having no surplus. Areas with adequate rainfall have
the ability to raise livestock. With the short amount of rainfall famine is very common in
Africa. The food patterns of these areas contain foods that are limited to rainfall amounts.
Subsistence farmers grow corn, legumes, sweet potatoes, potatoes, tef, millet, sorghum,
and bananas. Tef is a prominent staple in the diet of Africa, as it is consumed in many of its
diets throughout the region.
