International Negotiations – Google and The Chinese Government
The underlying case study “Google and The Chinese Government” demonstrates that the
efforts of Google entering the Chinese market in 2005 should not only be considered as an
example of a conventional company pursuing the target of expanding by entering into
another market.
Rather does it represent a case of one of the Western world’s most significant companies
trying to negotiate with a cultural and political system that could not maintain a greater
degree of difference.
The highly rigid legal regulations, strict censorship and Chinese government’s instrument
“The Great Firewall”,that Google sees itself confronted with, are only the result of what
had been coining the Chinese culture andhad evolved throughout decades. Therefore, the
business case has to be seen against the historical background of the establishment of a
social system severely fighting any Western influence or political discussion for it is seen
as a trigger of political instability.
Thus, any Western company wanting to enter the Chinese market will have to be aware of
the difficult negotiations that may arise due to these rigid structures.
The tremendous prevailing suppression will have to be faced on several levels during any
negotiation.
On a personal level, it has to be considered that the Chinese system will severely impact
any Chinese representative,as each individual will by all means attempt to please the
communist party and comply with the government’s objectives for its personal survival
within the system.
