China In The 21st Century Summary
Chapter 4: Mao to now: After Mao, Deng Xiaoping became the next greatest impact on China. He
became the de facto and the leader of the PCR. He helped to reform the political surge Mao left behind
and allowed Hong Kong’s transition from British territory to be made possible. He officially became the
leader in 1978, taking Mao’s position, he was purged for it. Deng accomplishments shown in his foreign
policy accomplishments, reestablished relations between Moscow and Beijing, and paved the way for
record breaking growth in his economic reform. Hu Yaobang was under Deng but then demoted. Ziyang
was Deng’s biggest ally. Jiang rose to power after Deng’s death in which he created a “harmonious
society.”Then the easy transition to appoint Hu Jiang’s position in power. The wall movement was a place
where protesters put up manifests in Beijing similar to the Hundred Flowers approach. The Tiananmen
Uprising was a “counterrevolutionary riot.” students and other classes ran protests for political reform.
