Childhood Obesity: The Causes & Quick Look
Do you know what the definition of obesity is? Do you know how many children are obese
in the world? These facts are very interesting and alarming. The energy it takes to become
skinny depends on “ingestion regularly exceeds expenditure” (Mongolia). According to the
Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2012, more than one third of children and
adolescents were overweight [3]. It is important to understand the definition of “childhood
obesity”: Childhood obesity relates to body mass index (BMI) and is a measure used to
determine childhood overweight and obesity. Overweight is defined as a BMI at or above
the 85th percentile and below the 95th percentile for children and teens of the same age
and sex. Obesity is defined as a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for children and teens
of the same age and sex”. –CDC 2012
Childhood obesity is a big problem in the world for the humans and the health people. We
have researched many papers to find some answers to this question. The problem of
childhood obesity has many causes and effects. This paper will show that the problem is a
combination of all causes.
America has people overweight and obesity has doubled in the last 30 years. The causes
for childhood obesity have been looked at medically first. It can be looked at as a disease
and to find the causes, we must look at the symptoms as well. Regular obesity has
symptoms of high blood pressure (hypertension), heart disease, high cholesterol, fatty
liver, and abnormal lipid levels which is called dyslipidemia (Mongolia). According to this
research, obesity causes cancer as well. As this problem increases, health in world
population has a big problem and can cause a big problem in the economy and health
services business. The cost of health treatment becomes more expensive and people have
to pay more taxes to pay for all the people that are obese people. Many causes include
childhood obesity, which is the start. Some causes have a genetic part to the problem.
Others look at the family situation and environment that creates kids to eat junk food and
not exercise. This can also include the economics of a family and how it relates to obesity.
Psychological problems also cause people to eat more food and to be depressed so that
they don’t move and sleep.
