Democratic Style of leadership. The democratic style of leadership or otherwise known
as participative leadership is a leadership style where the leader offers guidance to the
followers. The followers are encouraged to give ideas and participate in the decision
making. It is an open style of participation. Ideas are given freely within the group and
discussed openly.
Being effective with this type of leadership requires five rules. The first is to keep
communication open. The leader needs to ensure all participants give ideas freely. The
second rule is to focus on the discussion keeping it productive. The leader needs to make
sure to balance ideas and keep everything on topic. The leader cannot allow the topic to
stray off course. The third rule is to be ready to commit. There are many possibilities and
suggestions that it might be difficult to pick only one. The leader needs to find the right fit.
The fourth rule is to respect all ideas. As not everyone may agree with all ideas, it is
important to respect all opinions to keep a healthy environment. The last rule is to explain
but not apologize. Explain that all ideas were considered and were great ideas, but there
were specific reasons to go the direction the leader chose. Apologizing would be a
weakness. (http://www.leadership-toolbox.com/democratic-leadership-style.html)
Ginger was a democratic leader. The chickens followed Gingers lead and Ginger allowed
plenty of ideas for ways to escape. She had brain storming meetings where she allowed all
the chickens to give their thoughts and opinions. To me this is the best form of leadership
