Course overview:
Organic chemistry is the study of carbon containing compounds. The fact that living organisms are made
of carbon containing compounds makes organic chemistry the central science among various disciplines
of chemistry. In this course you will learn about various types of organic compounds, their classification,
structure, naming, chemical and physical properties, reactivity, preparation, and techniques to identify
them. In addition, you will have the opportunity to use concepts and ideas presented in general chemistry
for better understanding of the subject. Also, you will be able to appreciate the relevance of organic
chemistry in the biological functions of living organisms. This is a conceptually challenging course and
American Chemical Society standards will be kept in this course. This course demands more time
commitment than that of other upper level science courses in the NS department. It is advised that
students having difficulty with the content attend the office hours and SI sessions on a regular basis and
clarify questions.
Students will learn to:
Master the drawing, naming and classification of organic molecules
Analyze the 3D shape of organic molecules
Deduce the structure of organic compounds using infrared spectroscopy.
Learn the mechanisms of acid-base, SN1, SN2, E1 and E2 reactions
Establish the relative acidities, basicities, reactivities, and stabilities of a variety of organic
compounds
Predict the outcome of reactions involving radicals.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the semester students should be able to:
Draw, name, and classify alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, alkyl halides, and ethers.
Explain structure-property relationships of a variety of organic compounds.
