Elements that Deal with Action
Plot is more than the order of actions or conflict. It is also the pattern of those
actions. “If we oversimplify plot patterns by diagrams, we might describe one of the most
common as an upward slanting line followed by a peak and a downward slide, then a
short straight line. Another plot structure can be seen as an almost straight horizontal
line” (Lukens, Smith, Coffel, 2013). The most common of these patterns is complex. The
story moves from one event to another related event, rises to a peak or climax, and then
evidently ends. Rising action begins with a situation that must be shown and clarified.
