Chariot Race 1876 by Jean Léon Gérôme
Jean Léon Gérôme’s Chariot Race, represents a usual event from ancient Rome. The
piece was made in 1876 by a Frenchmen, which tells me that he was very interested in ancient
Rome; this isn’t the only painting of ancient Rome from him. This piece is an oil painting on a
cradle panel (textured), hanging on the wall and the closer I got to the painting the more detail I
saw.
The painting depicts a normal chariot race as the horses are making the turn around the
track. In the background, you can see the audience that fill every single seat in the arena. There
