Nora
In the next few pages, I will be giving a character sketch and
description of Nora in the play titled “A Doll House.” Some background
information for Nora is that she is the protagonist of the play and the
wife of Torvald. At first, Nora seems like a dumb, but playful child. She is
considered dumb because of her lack of knowledge of the outside world.
Nora does have some experience, though, because of a small act of
rebellion she engaged in. During this rebellion, we realize that Nora is
neither as innocent nor as playful as she appears.
Act 1 of the play starts out by Nora’s husband, Torvald, calling her
a skank. When he finds out that Nora bought very extravagant items
because she thought they could afford them, Torvald scolds her because
he doesn’t start his new job until the New Year. After this Torvald asks
Nora what she wants for Christmas, and she replies by saying she wants
money. This outrages Torvald so he tells her she’s wasteful with money
and that she gets that trait from her father. Throughout the first act, the
things Torvald says constantly abuse Nora. In the play it talks about how
he keeps giving her money just to make her happy, which would mean
he is manipulating her feels. This makes Nora Torvalds personal doll or
play toy. It seems as if Torvald is more worried about his social status
