Pod Discussion Three
The three concepts I’ve chosen from Chapter two of Rothwell’s text, In the Company
of Others, that best illustrates the video, A Muslim and Jewish Girl’s Bold Poetry Slam,
by the poets Amina Iro and Hannah Halpern are about first impressions, stereotyping
along with discrimination and prejudice, and the contact theory. The concept of first
impressions is about how you do not get a second chance, and that “you cannot avoid
virtually instantaneous impressions of others,” (Rothwell 51). The concept of
stereotyping along with discrimination and prejudice, “refers to negative feelings about
members of a group,” and “any behavior that manifests these negative
feelings,” (Rothwell 55). The concept of the contact theory, “predicts that interacting and
becoming more familiar with members of stereotyped groups can diminish prejudice
resulting in stereotyping,” (Rothwell 58). All of these concepts are illustrated in the
video.
The first concept illustrated in the video is about first impressions. The first
impression the poets were trying to give is how passionate they are about this topic.
The way the poets firmly and enthusiastically stated, “We’re just a little too caught up in
the way the world sees us,” (Iro and Halpern) shows how passionate they are about this
topic and gives an everlasting impression on the audience.
The second concept the video illustrates is about prejudice, discrimination and
stereotypes. This is illustrated when the pair of poets list off the prejudice and

discrimination that Muslims and Jews face. Some examples are, “suspicious terrorists,
big nosed banker, gas chamber, and go back home,” (Iro and Halpern). These
