Chapter III of Portrait of a Killer by Patricia Cornwell is a chapter that was written for an
audience that’s thrives off suspense. The tone of this chapter is very mysterious all while at the
same time not being too over-dramatic to the point where it cannot be realistic. A chapter such as
this one is what most adults would shelter from younger kids because of the story being told and
the explicit word choice and detailing. From the detailed descriptions of murder, rape,
prostitution, and psychopaths it’s clear that this chapter is for an audience that consists of young
adults (high school aged) and older. The details get gruesome at certain points in the chapter like
