Rape: Forced sexual behavior with an individual without that individual’s
consent.
o Rape is difficult to define, legally; each state has its own definitions
of sexual assult.
o Rape is inextricably linked to gender roles.
Incidence of Rape:
o Estimates state that 15 percent of adult women in the U.S. have been
raped at some point in their lives, and another 3% have been victims
of attempted rape. In men, these estimates for rape and attempted
rape are 2% and 1%, respectively.
o Campus: Estimates suggest that 3% of women experience a completed
and/or attempted rape during a typical college year. In these acts, 90
percent of the offenders were known to the women, and 60 % of the
attempts took place in the woman’s residence
