Egg Drop Challenge Lab Report
Section 1:
The objective in the egg drop lab was to design and build a platform made up of straws and
masking tape to catch a fresh, unprotected egg. The team designed a structure that was
lightweight and able to absorb the energy from the egg. The goal of the lab was to get the highest
class ranking possible, calculated by
Height (cm) from where the egg is dropped
Ranking = —————————————————-
Mass (grams) of catching platform
The engineering design process was used to research the problem, brainstorm the possible
solutions, design/ build a platform, then later redesign it.
The teams were allowed to test the design three times by dropping an egg from any height they
chose. Then, the teams improved their designs to later test the design again. Weighing the
platform after each design change was required.
Rules of the Challenge Included the Following:
1. Teams were not allowed to protect the egg in any way.
2. Each team was allowed three drops total.
3. The egg was to free fall after the release.
4. The egg was dropped from at least three feet above the top of the platform.
5. If the egg managed to break open, the height was to be rendered zero.
6. If the egg cracked, then the height was to be divided by two.
7. If the dropped egg missed the apparatus, the height was recorded as zero

building:

The legend on the sketch depicts how the group decided to use the materials provided for the
initial design.
