Chapter 1 Summary
Chapter 1 overall is about communication. Throughout the chapter it is made very clear
that in the workplace communication is essential. The chapter starts off by introducing why
communication is important, the main reasons is because it allows more understanding in the
workplace. Communication is needed because it is used to “request information, discuss
problems, give instructions, work in teams and interact with colleagues and clients” (Rentz
pg5). The chapter also highlights the various uses of using business communication, one of
them being problem solving. Stated in the chapter there are two types of problems, one being
called “WellDefined problems” while the other is called “IllDefined problems”. Well-Defined
problems are problems that have a process to which you can come to a correct answer.
Meanwhile Ill-defined problems according to the chapter are problems that are unpredictable
