1. Why was this fight so important to the characters in the story? 4pts
✓ The fight was so important to the characters in the story because it was the first time a
black fought an America, they wanted to let the whites know that the black people are
not slaves and that they are not low types of human being. So they really wanted Joe
Louis to win.
2. Describe the changing mood in the story. 6pts
✓ The changing mood in the story was excitement, tense and anxious because Joe was
fighting very well. Then the mood change from sad because the contender was beating
Joe, but then Joe didn’t give up and went back to track and win and all the African
American was very happy and celebrating. It is described as being so crowded that
people are even on the porch.
3. Why was it unsafe for a black man to walk home after the fight? 3pts
✓ It was unsafe for a black man to walk home after the fight because the white men might
want to get revenge on the black man for the reason that he won the match against the
white man and him feel ashamed for getting beaten by a black man.
