COURSE CATALOG DESCRIPTION
The course focuses on the research paper, the longer essay, argumentation, critical writing, and
reading. The course meets General Education "College Writing" Requirement Area I.
Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in College Writing I (ENG111).
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of College Writing II, a student should be able to:
Work effectively with a wide array of texts and read and understand diverse works by
different authors;
Write about complex issues from a variety of perspectives and work with complex issues
and ideas with a considerable amount of depth;
Effectively read and understand complex issues that occur in essays the students will read
and successfully discuss and write about the complex issues that occur in the work;
Work with a variety of multiple perspectives and utilize those perspectives in both
understanding a reading or issue and in writing an essay;
Develop a strong firm stand in an argument essay, support that argument with specific and
logical evidence that comes from both the writer’s imagination as well as from sources from
other writers;
Recognize and avoid logical fallacies and make sure that argument essays do not contain
such mistakes;
Effectively and independently search for research material in the library and on the Internet;
Effectively integrate researched material into the writer’s own paper in order to utilize
external sources as a form of support for the author’s principal ideas;
Understand the key elements of successful writing;
Understand the major steps in the writing process and understand the steps that the author
must go through in order to turn rough drafts into polished pieces of writing;
Edit for sentence correctness as well as style and conciseness.

You are expected to participate actively, regularly in all the forums, article discussions; you
are required to read all the weekly files which are meant to guide you with your assignments.
My comments will be directed to one student for specific concerns or to all of you when it is
of a general nature.

Online Discussions of Selected Articles
You are expected to participate in discussions of the selected articles on a regular basis. This
includes both your initial comments and your response to your classmates’ comments. Both your
frequency of participation and the quality of your contribution will be evaluated.
