“A Model of Christian Charity'' written by John Winthrop describes building a utopian
society, exemplified as a city upon a hill. Setting up the New World, the Puritan’s had a fear of
failing and disappointing their God. This utopian society strive to “...delight in each other, make
others Conditions our own, rejoice together, mourn together, labour, and suffer together, always
having before our eyes our Commission'' (Winthrop, 27) which shows the dedication of the
Puritan’s as a whole instead of a individualistic type of mindset. John Winthrop emphasizes the
action of being selfless and caring in their mission or else they will not succeed on this journey
nor will their God want to support them.
