development advances, and merger and acquisition opportunities.
2. What does the video claim is the evidence these attacks are coming from China? Is
this believable?
Nortel Network being attacked by hackers is a steppingstone for further investigations by Brian
Shields. In only two months, he and his team of IT experts tracked the originating IP address of
the hackers that got into the Nortel’s system. The IP was coming out of Asia, Shanghai. Later in
2008, after analysing the CEO’s internet activity, Shields noticed strange traffic over to Beijing.
3. What does Adam Siegel in the video claim is the motivation of the Chinese
government for conducting cyberespionage against the United Stated?
They are afraid of falling behind in technology, which would hurt their economic and political
objectives.
4. Why didn’t Nortel management take the Chinese threat seriously? Why do various
contributors in the video claim that American management does not take the
problem seriously?
Due to the facts that Brian did not provide any strong evidence that they were any attacks from
China and cyber threats were not common during that time. Also, because they did not
comprehend how severe of a danger cyber espionage is, American management did not take the
matter seriously, although some were taking harsh measures against it and did not want to speak
about it.
5. The video claims the attacks on American corporate and military computer systems
are increasingly sophisticated. Do you believe this is true?
