Caught between China and America
Amy Tan often writes based on her personal life, her parents moved to the United States
seeking for better opportunities, and to escape the civil war in Chan. In her short story, A pair of
tickets, Tan (1989) includes Diaspora as to tell the story of a girl with Chinese parents who was
born in the United States “and therefore, adopted a typical American lifestyle” (Kire, 2014, p.
87). The narrator follows the primary theme of Diaspora: “the distance predicament of being
caught between two worlds; two cultures and yet not belonging to neither. This creates an acute
sense of loss of identity” (Kire, 2014, pp. 86-87). Diaspora can also be defined as not being able
to escape their roots which is steeped in tradition preventing them from fully embracing the
American culture (Kire, 2014, p 87).
