Case Study “I Never Wanted to Be A Supervisor Anyway”
1. Did Phil and Alan make a mistake in promoting John? Why or why not?
Phil and Alan rushed into the promotion; there were many aspects that
they both didn’t account for. It was a good idea but they didn’t establish it
correctly. He should have been trained for around three months. Although
he did know the basics of the restaurants, he wasn’t prepared for it. The
human resources manager and the human resource director both said he
was an outgoing person. They decided to give him the job even though
they both knew he wasn’t prepared fully.
2. What should Alan do about John?
Alan should retrain him and then when he is ready to be on his own then
to leave him alone. He should also make sure that Martha is ok. Susan
should also do damage control.
3. Assuming Alan decides to keep John on as supervisor, what are the mediate steps
Alan should take with John?
i. Alan should be on top of John and she needed to ask George, the
coffee manager needs to check up on John and ask George how to
train him better. They need to come up with scenarios to further
train him. Phil should also retrain him.
4. If John stays on as supervisor, what are the mediate steps Alan and John should
take with other people affected by John’s outburst?
i. John should apologize to her in person and compensate and get her
to relax. John needs to stop being a pushover and talk to the rest of
his staff, he needs to put his foot down. John should also apologize
