Part I: Introduction to Mikale
Mikale is four years old and lives with his mom and dad in an apartment
downtown. Mikale’s father is an engineer and spends a few weeks a month up
north in Fort McMurray while his mother stays at home as a housewife.
They also have quite a few pets, two teacup puppies, an assortment of lizards and
some fish. Mikale is presently the only child but that will be changing in a few
months, as his mother is pregnant and due at the end of March.
He loves cars, animals, spiderman and slur-pees and being inside and outside of
his apartment. Mikale’s favourite show is Spongebob. He does not like the word
“No” and is having a tough time adjusting to his mom’s attempts to add structure
into their unstructured lives as her due date approaches.
Mikale’s family is middle class as his father has a pretty good earning job that is
able to support the family comfortably and allow Mikale’s mom to be a stay at
home mom. Throughout this case study, the observation of Mikale will take place
at two places: his house, inside and out and around the neighbourhood.
Part II: Physical Development
Mikale developed normally through the prenatal, infancy, and toddler stages. He
was born on November 3rd 2013 by cesarean section after a full term, normal
pregnancy with his mother having minor morning sickness in the second term of
her pregnancy with him. At birth, he weighed eight pounds twelve ounces and
measured twenty-one inches long, which according to the Center for Disease
Control (2000), put him in the seventy-fifth percentile for weight and ninetieth
percentile for length. As an infant Lula, Mikale’s mother chose not to breast feed
and instead gave him a soy based formula , she later found out that baby Mikale
was lactose intolerant which the soy formula helped with. Mikale follows a mainly
plant based diet with lean cuts of meat and fish due to his mother having taken a
nutrition course in college “Children tend to imitate the food choices and eating
practices of people they admire, both adults and peers” ( Fisher et al., 2001). He
mostly eats healthy sugars such as natural fruit juices and raw cane sugar. He like
