In the case study, Redskins No More, people in Gooding were trying to avoid replacing their
original school name and cultural change. They thought the name of their school was a symbol
for them and did not want to have their school identity changed. The tactics they used to resist
the change was to explain that their intent was never to be offensive, but to honor Natives.
Personally, I would describe the efforts of Scott Rogers and the school as an adaptive leader
because they took a chance to change, voted to change the name, listened to the community
and took actions to change, and they both were adaptive to changing times. The school board
also created an environment where students would slowly adapt to a new name, which they
would later come to accept. They also allowed people to express their views concerning change
of the name, they ensured that people understood the impact of the name change and the use
of the term, Redskins, and they later gave the people the chance to choose a new name. The
low status group in this case is the one that did not want to affiliate with the name redskins. By
changing the name, they were able to have a voice in the community and school team.
