Case Study #1
1. College students have many opportunities to start developing management skills. In groups of three or
four students, brainstorm a list of skills that managers need. Next, consider how you could start developing
these skills while you are in college. Consider both formal opportunities, such as joining organizations, as
well as informal opportunities involved with managing your own workload. Create a list of ideas and be
prepared to share your list with the class.
First and for most a manager needs to have great time management skills. This is an important skill to have
to ensure that an organization continues to run smoothly by getting what need to be done; done in an adequate
amount of time. Managers are often expected to complete work in a certain deadline. This is the most valuable skill a
manager can have. Also great organizational skills must be needed. A manager is responsible for running their
department whether they are a first-line manager, middle-line manager, or top of the line manager. Managers are the
ones who outline what needs to be done. Also a few other great skills are interpersonal and relationship-building skill
(CASTLE principles), delegation (delegate who does what), communication, problem solving, and leadership.
One could start to develop managerial skills in college by signing up for clubs and volunteer work and
designating themselves as the head spokesperson or leader. This would be effective and beneficial. The head
“manager” of these such groups would need time management skills to make sure that any volunteer work is booked
in time or that all the club members are assigned proper positions as club members. Also they would need proper
leadership, so that members of the group stay on track and know what to do.
In planning my own workload some formal opportunities would be to create a chart that illustrates the time
sequence and timescale of each task within the work project. This type pf project would most likely involve a wide
