Sharath’s Dilemma: Can Hemp Paper Succeed in India?
You are Sharath, a recent alumnus of a coveted B-school in India. You’ve always been an
environmentalist and have participated in several eco-friendly initiatives during your college days.
As someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, you wish to start something of your own that will help
Indians consume everyday products in a more environmentally aware manner.
Recently, you came across a few journals and podcasts that highlight how ‘hemp paper’ is
increasingly being lauded for its chemical-free and non-toxic properties. By using paper made
from hemp plants as opposed to using wood pulp for manufacturing, several startups abroad have
seen success. They’re able to deliver high-quality stationery products, while also reducing their
carbon footprint. You’re naturally attracted to this proposition and begin ideating an allin-one
platform to sell products made from hemp paper to Indians who would wish to explore more
organic, natural ways of consumption. India’s conducive climate to grow hemp and nurture its
properties is another added advantage.
However, not all is rosy as you begin to jot down a GTM strategy for your venture. The biggest
roadblock standing in your way is the stigma associated with hemp and its associated products in
the Indian society. Almost everyone you share your idea with is of the impression that hemp is
used only for psychedelics and does not believe that productive uses can come out of the plant.
