The Case of the One Percent
Case Background: I am an employee in a company which floated a contract worth Rs. 25 Crore
in which two companies’ ABC and XYZ have made same bid and both companies are reputable
in the market and long players in the industry segment. Board and senior team have examined all
the nitty gritty of the project and the companies. They have assigned me a responsibility because
of my creditability, to assign project to any company as per my wish, as they were busy in some
other important works. However, representative of ABC company approaches me and offered me
One percent of project amount i.e. 25 Lakhs for my own under the table as their company is in dire
need to do the project if I allot project to their company (ABC). Representative also assured me
there would be no repercussions of this and it is completely safe.
Ethical Dilemma: I am facing ethical dilemma as I have two options:
Accept the offer Vs Reject the offer and offer to any of them.
Considerations and Consequences of Choices:
1. Accept the offer: As ABC has taken an extra effort to pursue me and I am in a position to
allocate to anyone. As, per discussions in the class following things were not kept in
mind:
• I am only the allocating authority. Usually supervisor is a different person and
my role in company has not been clearly stated. As per the responsibility assigned
