In 1994, Clive Beddoe discovered that is was cost-effective to purchase an
aircraft for his weekly business travels. During the time he was not using the aircraft,
Beddoe made it available for charter to other cost-conscious business people
through Morgan Air. The response to this venture caused Morgan and his colleagues
to realize that there was an opportunity to satisfy the need in Western Canada for
affordable air travel coupled with good service by starting an airline. In 1996 after
much planning the airline started operations flying to the cities of Vancouver,
Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg. By 1999 it was clear that the airlines
was a success. It went public and rapidly raised $25 million through its initial
offering. Since the beginning WestJet has been consistently ranked among the most
