EDUC 1300 CAREER RESEARCH PROJECT
Introductory Paragraph
Begin your Project by writing an Introduction (at least 100 words). Begin this section
with hook, transitional sentences, and end with a thesis statement. Type your thesis
statement in parenthesis. A thesis states the most important idea you want to convey
to your reader. Everything else you write merely supports this idea by answering
questions that an engaged reader might have about your thesis. A thesis is made up of
two elements: (1) the topic you are writing about, and (2) the claim you make about the
top. A thesis statement is one sentence, and has the following structure: [Topic] +
[Claim]
The thesis of informative writing (which this Career Project is) tells your readers
something they presumably do not already know. See sample introductory paragraphs
in the Introductory Paragraph Sample document posted in the Career Project folder.
Career Research
1. The first website you will use is O*NetOnline (http://www.onetonline.org/).
Complete the O*Net Interest Profiler. On the O*Net home page, click Find it Now under
I want to be a . . . . box (in the purple section on the right-hand side of the screen). On
the next page, click Start under “I’m not really sure.” This will take you to the Interest
Profiler. On the first 4 screens, click the Next button at the bottom to continue. You
can use the Back button at the bottom to re-read the instructions.
You are now on the first page of the Profiler. Rank the next 12 items. You will have
four more screens to complete with 12 items on each for a total of 60 items. When you
finish, you will get a set of Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Conventional,
Enterprising (RIASCE) scores based on your responses. Click the Print button to go to
the Print screen. Type your name in the Printed for: box, and save a copy of your
scores to turn in with the career project. To save the results, press the Prt Sc (print
screen) key on your keyboard. Open a Word document, and press CTRL + V to paste a
copy of the Profiler onto the Word page. Save the document, and upload it in the link
provided in the Career Project folder.
Write about the results. What do you think about the results? Do you agree or
disagree with the results. Why or why not? Give examples that support your answer as
to why you agree or why you disagree. Be sure to include a discussion of your scores in
this section. (200 words)
2. This next part involves only reading the onscreen information. Select a job zone or level
of education and training that you want to do. To do this click Next to view the first of
three screens that explains how to use this part of the Profiler.
Read the information on the Interests + Job Zones/Careers screen. Click Next.
Read the information on the Current of Future? screen. Click Next.
Read the information on the Explore the Job Zones screen. The five Job Zones listed on
this screen have links to information about the experience, education, and training you
will need for each zone. Click Next.
From the Select a Job Zone screen, select the level of training and education you are
willing to undertake. The majority of students begin their educational path at EPCC with
the intention of transferring to a four-year college or university. Job Zone 4 is for
students interested in earning a bachelor’s degree. Select this job zone, and click Next.
On the next screen, you will see careers related to your Interest Profile in your chosen
Job Zone.
You will get a list of careers recommended for you based on both your RIASCE scores
and the job zone you selected. The lists are extensive for all zones. To see more lists,
click Find More Careers to select a Single Interest Area based on your results. I suggest
