One may truly never understand what it means to become a registered nurse and
the sacrifices that these healthcare professionals make on a routine basis. The
interviewee is approximately forty years old and has been a registered nurse for four
years and eight months and states that she anticipates being in her role for years to
come. The interviewee’s official career title is a Certified Wound Care Nurse. She
details to me how her career as a registered nurse has impacted her lifestyle, family life
and her personal values.
Prior to the interviewee becoming a registered nurse, she had a successful
career in the IT world. While she appreciated how lucrative her role was at a prominent
IT Firm, she expressed how unhappy she was with that career field. Having a family to
take care of, she was often nervous about pursing a career in nursing, not only leaving
her position at the IT Firm, but also being able to maintain the same type of lifestyle on
a nursing salary. While she was accustomed to a set schedule in her previous role, the
world of 9-5 PM, was no longer feasible with her role as a new nurse. She described the
long hours when she initially became a nurse, consisting of a 3-day shift, 12-hour days
from 7 PM to 7 AM. While this lifestyle change was significantly different that what she
was used to, she eventually got used to it. After working that shift for two years, she
now works part-time at the same hospital two days a week.
Going back to school while maintaining a family was hard work according to the
interviewee. She has a supportive husband and two children, ages ten and eleven. She
