PART I
Current Position and kind of work, work setting
For this project I decided to gather an in-depth information about a production manager at
a radio station – Seung Nam Hong. The interview ran smoothly and her responses were
quite clear and full.
Seung-Nam grew up in Seoul, South Korea. She is currently 40 years old, mother of one
child. At the age of 22 she moved to Canada to apply for university where she also found
an internship work at a local radio station in Montreal. Back in Korea, in her high school
she showed a talent for art and media as well had an interest in French literature –
lecturing, reading books especially foreign literature. Eventually, she enrolled at Concordia
University for Communication studies where she found interest in producing, advertising
and music. She is the production manager for Voice of Korea studio. Although it would
have been more ideal and helpful if I chose someone who is in a position where I would
like to be in the near future, despite I did feel that it was still somewhat related to what I
see myself doing as my long-term goal: to become a director and a manager in a certain
department of the company.
The first question I asked was about her current position and the responsibilities she takes
for this particular job. She mentions that producers are the main players in the television,
film and video industries. They will oversee each project from conception to completion
and may also be involved in the marketing and distribution processes. As a producer she
works closely with directors and other production staff on the shoot. Increasingly, she
needs to have directing skills as the producer may also be the director and may take care of
all project operations. She arranges funding for each project and is responsible for keeping
the production within the allocated budget. Seung-Nam also mentioned how creativity is a
big key to this type of job. Before this position, there were couple qualification and
training that are required. So in order to become a production manager a good degree in an
appropriate subject is necessary and she put a great emphasis in her education saying that
because she had a strong education background she was able to qualify for the position.
