Cardiovascular Disease Project
There are many types of cardiovascular disease, however, the most prevalent in the United States is
atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a buildup in the arteries of plaque which inhibits the flow of blood to
various organs throughout the body. Over time the reduction of blood flow could cause numerous other
problems such as hypertension, myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, cerebrovascular incidents, renal
dysfunction or even failure, heart rate variability, and up to cardiac arrest.
According to the World Heart Federation “most people who develop cardiovascular disease do so because
of a combination of factors such as poor diet, lack of physical activity and smoking”(1). This means that
