On the banks of the Muskingum River, once stood a marvelous fortification known as
Campus Martius, a site that would define the United States Government expanding to Western
territories. In April of 1788, a large group of pioneers would travel to a new northwest territory;
they would name this new territory Marietta. Soon after settlement, a large site was erected in
1791, and would eventually be named “Campus Martius” by the Marietta people. The
construction of Campus Martius was authorized by the United States Government and was home
to the first territorial Governor. The reason for constructing such a site was to protect the settlers
