1. The strengths and weaknesses of Campbell & Bailyn’s brokerage division
Being around the industry for more than 100 years, Campbell & Bailyn (C&B) is one of the
most prestigious investment banks in the industry. This is why one of the organization’s key strengths,
among others, is its strong reputation (Exhibit 1). Over the years, C&B could leverage its brand to
continuously build its second major strength, which is the firm’s rich and highly interconnected network
of clients. Thus, in the past, C&B exploited this network by building and nurturing longlasting and
valuable relationships with key clients through superior service and product expertise. However, this
was only possible by leveraging another, even more critical core strength. As C&B is a “people
business”, its human capital is certainly the most essential resource. With its hardworking generalists,
highly knowledgeable specialists, and vastly admired regional sales manager Winston, C&B’s pool of
professionals yields a competitive advantage since it is valuable, rare, hard to replicate by competitors
and highly organized (Lobo, 2021). Despite C&B’s glorious past performance, new industry dynamics
reveal flaws in the organizational structure and pressure the firm to realign. First, increasingly complex
financial products challenge C&B’s generalists and its customers alike. As a response, customers
started to vertically integrate into the value chain by building own capabilities, thus tapping into C&B’s
business. C&B reveals a weakness here in a sense that its staff lacks sufficient product knowledge to
